Foundations

The Morse Church is an “ancient/future” church. This means that we wish to be a 21st century expression of the 1st century church. The historical passages listed below serve as our foundation. In these passages, we learn that the 1st century church was dedicated to:

  1. Gathering together for worship.
  2. Reading the Old and the New Testament.
  3. Instructing and exhorting.
  4. Rising and praying
  5. Sharing bread, wine, and water
  6. Receiving an offering
  7. Taking care of those in need
  8. Meeting in homes for spiritual formation, accountability, and pastoral care.

Jeremiah 6:16 (Hebrew Old Testament) — This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.

Acts 2:42 (Christian Bible’s New Testament)42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

First Apology of Justin Martyr, AD 90 — And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits; then, when the reader has ceased, the president verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things. Then we all rise together and pray, and, as we before said, when our prayer is ended, bread and wine and water are brought, and the president in like manner offers prayers and thanksgivings, according to his ability, and the people assent, saying Amen; and there is a distribution to each, and a participation of that over which thanks have been given, and to those who are absent a portion is sent by the deacons. And they who are well to do, and willing, give what each thinks fit; and what is collected is deposited with the president, who succors the orphans and widows and those who, through sickness or any other cause, are in want, and those who are in bonds and the strangers sojourning among us, and in a word takes care of all who are in need.
